What has this world come to?

First of all, I know you are shocked with two blogs in two weeks, but had to get this off my chest.

Yesterday at Barnes and Nobles I sat an looked through the 2007 year end issue of Rolling Stone to see what I had missed this year. I looked at their Top 100 albums/cd's/songs, whatever, they are still albums to me.

Of the Top 100, I think I have heard maybe two, the new Wilco album and one other. I had not heard of probably 80 of the artists which really didn't bother given RS's slant to keeping up with the culture you know. I also looked at a few other music magazines and suddenly realized that I am out of touch with what is "happenin".

I am thankful for that don't get me wrong now. I wish I did not have a cell phone or a computer although I have to admit, an Ipod is essential. Music has changed so much in the last 40 ears that I have really paid attention, there is still no doubt in my mind that most of the good music and music that will really last was made from 1964-1971. Think about that for a minute and tell me some music made from 1972-2007 that will be remembered when you kids start paying attention to the history of music. Yes, I know I am prejudiced, but how many Bob Dylan's, Neil Young's, Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Who, Led Zeppelin or Grateful Dead's came from the second era I mentioned. Hello, none.

I do like some music that started in the 90's like Pearl Jam, Wilco, My Morning Jacket and I think that there music will last.

Also, the sad state that there is not one candidate today that I would vote for tomorrow if it were election day is pretty discouraging.

Time for me to go put on some vinyl on the old KLH, smoke a cigarette and remember the good ol' days. Think I will stat with my tattered copy of "Meet the Beatles" circa 1964.

Your old man.

Spell check..."40 ears" is a long time.

I would say that Nirvana, Metallica, and Rage Against the Machine changed the face of music and would be the only revolutionary bands during the second period you mentioned. They all spawned a lot of what is on the airwaves today - even though I would agree that most of what is out today is shite. Other than that, I doubt Colin will look back at the music of my generation (Def Leopard, Motley Crue, G&R, MC Hammer, Milli Vanilli, etc.) and be impressed.

I would agree. There are bands in our time that were "great" bands. I dont think any lifetime or generation will have the music like you had in the 60-70's. I would agree, but I would take Nirvana out (because of longivity) and replace with PJ. Most of these bands like yours wont be famous until dead. Just like Nirvana. You have to look deep to find bands that changed music, because they are not "mainstream". Metallica for instance when first came out were not at all mainstream. RATM speaks for itself. They broke up when they got into the mainstream.

I would agree with RATM, but not Nirvana and probably Metallica either.

I also agree with Luke about Pearl Jam. They will live on probably more so than Wilco or MMJ at this point.

To know that Madonna will be ushered into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is disgusting too.

Rock on.

That is sick. Our generation didnt have anything to sing about. Think about all the things your generation had and cared for....

Dudes...remember race relations were much different back in "the day" and things changed much more slowly then. If you want to talk about Rap/R&B that changed the music, speak about The Beastie Boys, RUN DMC, Ice Cube, NWA, etc. The stuff that me and K Jones used to listen to in his old style Camaro and me and Miller used to listen to in that red truck w/ huge speakers. Anyhoo...all of these bands listed (except the crap from the 90's) are worthy of our ears.
